I always make a backup of my system prior to making any major changes (Updating from Snow Leopard to Lion, installing a Boot Camp partition, even upgrading iLife). If you don't have any backup media available, you might consider an online cloud backup service such as CrashPlan (which I use). If you want a one time use, you can back up for free for 30 days while you do your upgrade. If you like the service it's only $5 a month, less if you pay by the year. Plus with CrashPlan you can access you files anywhere on iPhone/iPad or on any web browser.
