Boot Camp for a 14 year old

I live in SoCal and I'm looking for a summer boot camp that will teach discipline and responsibility to a smart teen who lacks personal confidence. Are there any summer camps that will help me? I already checked out Devil Pups and Waterman Academy.

I know you probably fee like you are at your wits end and this may be a chance to break down and rebuild your teen as a productive member of society. Teen boot camps were extremely popular in the late 90's (I think due to the media attention on talk shows) but research since then has indicated that not only has long-term effects for a very very small percentage of teens (about 5-6%) but it is more likely to be harmful rather than helpful.

In psychology and behavioral modification fields, this methodology is call a "confrontational approach" where military and correctional experts use intimidation and humiliation as a way to "break the spirit" so to speak of the teen and retrain them. Now for teens who are truly asocial (meaning that they have a complete disregard for life and a lack of empathy) this can be an effective method, but this is about 1-2% of the population and MUST be diagnosed by a psychiatrist (not a counselors or a psychologist).

For most other teens their issues result from poor self esteem, lack of boundaries, emotional, behavioral or learning problems. You can see how if this is the ROOT of the issue how degrading tactics will only cause permanent and sometimes irreversible damage.

I would suggest, before doing this that you try going to family counseling. If there is something in the family contributing to the behavior (and I am 99% sure there is because all families have issues especially with communication). Then if you and the counselor decide it's the best thing to do, then at least you know you have exhausted all other resources.

Good luck - it's not easy being a parent.

They have a childrens home in Masa Arizona. The home is for children that have know parents or have promblems at home. This home does not take in any children that are in trouble with the law. We sent our son to this home for a year because he was giving me(stepmother) a hard time because his mother just gave him to us and he had a hard time dealing with it. The name of the boys home is Sunshine acreaces and its off Higley Rd. They may have a waiting period, but not for sure. We were able to get him out over the weekends. He had to spend a certain amount of time there first. But we were allowed to visit until we could get him over the week ends. It helped our son alot. I haven't their number off hane but you should be able to get it from the operator. Good luck

Reportedly, few incidents that did happen in boot camps , don't necessarily show or prove that they are ineffective in getting productive results for building up teens. Boot camps are not designed to deal with the behavioral elements and the emotional issues developed in struggling teens. Boot Camps like their sister programs military schools are not conducive to assisting teens make and keep long term change. Boot camp and teen military programs aim to teach kids discipline, teamwork, and appreciation. In some aspects they are successful at teaching teens appreciation if the teen is not begrudgingly following orders knowing he or she only has to endure the teen boot camp or wilderness program for a few weeks. Teen boot camps and wilderness programs try to perform quick fixes on teens that have been struggling for months if not years. The idea that a teen will realize the direction his or her life is heading and be self -motivated for change is unlikely. Even if a teen desperately wanted to change his or her life they will not likely be able to replace their inappropriate learned behaviors with appropriate behaviors, in a few months. Without replacing these learned inappropriate behaviors it is very likely that a teen will enter his or her previous state of behavior within a few weeks or months after their experience at teen boot camp or wilderness programs. Longer-term and less hectic emotional growth is much more effective at helping teens replace their inappropriate behaviors with productive ones. For a specialty boarding school or residential treatment center which offers a much better chance for success for a troubled teen. The ironic component of that scenario is tuition at a quality boarding school can be competitive with a boot camp or wilderness program for troubled teens. With the military-style environment of a boot camp or wilderness program the in your face atmosphere can be intensely overwhelming, the primary philosophy behind boot camps is that the teen will become disciplined and that will be an end all do all for the rest of their problems and inappropriate behaviors.
Boot camps although often ineffective may work if a teen is enrolled early in his or her inappropriate behavior. They could learn discipline and the fear of going back if they misbehave again might work for them. In saying however it is important to consider what the psychological effects of this strategy could be on the struggling teen.
