25 y.o. unemployed all of 2009 except 1 mo. went in military. Is he my dependant? He has been on numerous job searches---no unemployment $$ from state or us government. He signed for military in Feb 2009 but did not go to bootcamp until late May. He became ill and was discharged in late June 2009. He has lived with me all this time with no income. He & I do not have $ for him to re-enter college, So is he my dependant for 2009? |

You can claim him as a qualifying relative as long as his pay from bootcamp/other sources was below $3650. He'd have to live with you the entire year, but his time away from home from being in the miliary can be considered a temporary absence.
As for college, there is lots of financial aid out there. I don't usually reccommend going into debt, but even if he has to take out some student loans it may be a good investment in his future. Contact your local community college and see what's available. My own 21 year old doesn't have a dime to spend of her own for college, but she's going to college on a combination of grants, scholarships and loans.
